CREATIVE DANCE: for adults
Have you ever wanted to learn how to dance but been too intimidated to go to a very serious pre-professional dance studio? This class is for you! In it we will focus on harnessing your body's natural ability to dance. No choreography to memorize, or classical technique to torture yourself with. We aim to have fun and explore movement together in a low pressure environment. Get ready to partner with your inner-child and cultivate your innate ability to dance.

Location: The Floor- 310 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn NY
Starting May 1st - THURSDAYS AT 7PM!
This is a drop-in class! Cost $35, cash, check, Venmo or Zelle at time of class.

This class is about exploration and play. We spend so much time trying to achieve the next goal, to meet the next deadline, and busy ourselves in the NY hustle. In this class we are going to give your nervous system a break from goal-oriented life and instead embody the child-like wonder that can accompany something as joyful as dance. We will give you new ways to hear music, and provide your body with more options of how to explore and express that music through dance and movement.

Meet Rachel
Hi, I am Rachel and I am the founder of Unite Through Dance! I was a professional ballroom dancer and have loved exploring dance my whole life. I have also- even as a high level dancer- felt terrified going to dance studios where everything is so serious and everyone is so skilled. After teaching a huge variety of people, including people with a large range of disabilities, I have come to a new understanding of what all is encapsulated by the word "dance" and how that can be explored in innumerable ways. From using dance as a way to process trauma, a joyful way to improve mobility and gross/fine motor skills, to a conduit to be silly and playful, dance provides endless ways to bless our lives.
Class Description
What to expect in class
Warmup
Every class will start with a fun warm-up activity. From exploring animal movements together, acting out a slow-motion bar fight, shaking our bodies, to spending time playing on the floor, we will prepare our bodies to dance while laughing and releasing tension from the day together.
Dance Concept
Each week we will explore one dance concepts. Some of the ideas we will cover include: using different planes of movement, playing with textures of dance (like sharp and smooth), exploring size, shape and direction of movement, dance shaping the experience of music vs. being shaped by the experience of music, and embodying emotion through dance.
Musicality
As a dancer, when I listen to music, I hear it and am inspired by the emotion, the play between the melodies, rhythms, instruments and vocals. I listen for the shifts throughout songs, the changes in energy level, volume, speed, intensity and emotion. We will work each week on listening more deeply to music and translating that developing sense into movement and dance.
Relax
Our bodies need time to absorb information and to settle into the experience they just had. We will rest, relax and move slowly when we process and stretch at the end of each class.
